What is flex and how to use the calculator
What does flex mean?
Stick flex refers to how stiff or bendy a hockey stick shaft is when force is applied. It's measured as the amount of force (in pounds) needed to bend the stick one inch.
Why is this important?
Choosing the correct flex is essential for power, accuracy, and control. A stick that's too flexible may reduce precision and risk deformation, while one that's too stiff can make it difficult to properly load for an effective shot.
How to Use the Calculator
1. Enter your weight — or pick a weight preset.
2. Enter stick length — or choose from presets.
3. Hit “Calculate Flex” to get your numbers.
Lower number = more bendy
If you want to see the flex at the extreme end of the scale for you, try pressing the WHIP or STIFF buttons for something more new school or old school.

How does the calculator work?
Stick flex isn’t a guess — it’s physics.
The calculator is based on a method which takes into account your weight and your stick length to give you a flex rating that’s actually useful.
The Formula
Flex = (Weight × Length²) / (magic number)
Weight is in pounds (lbs)
Length is in inches (in)
This equation simulates how much force a player of your weight applies when using a stick of your chosen length.
A heavier player naturally puts more pressure on the stick.
A longer stick bends more easily due to added leverage.
We also give you two outputs:
A standard flex (popular flex for forwards),
A stronger flex (around 10% higher), ideal for defensemen or power shooters who lean into their shots more.
This gives you a practical starting point — especially helpful if you're choosing your first stick or want to compare different setups.
Note: The flex values shown are based on retail stick ratings. They do not account for adjustments made when cutting or extending a stick. This calculator is meant as a helpful guide (and a bit of fun), but the final choice is yours — we can’t take responsibility if a stick’s flex isn’t the perfect match. (even if you are an Ostrich.
